Sharing Trends in 2011
December 13th, 2011 by Greg Cypes in Using AddThisThe response to our inforgraphic on sharing trends from 2010 was so high, we knew we had to follow up this year. Allow us to introduce trends in sharing for 2011. Beyond just the most popular sharing services, we’ve taken a look back at the most shared stories this year. It’s been an amazing one for us at Clearspring. We’re proud to say AddThis is now on 11 million domains world wide! We hope you’ve had a great year, too. Here’s to 2011 and an even better 2012!

wow these are some pretty interesting numbers, I am guessing that google+ will eventually get on this list? even though it seems like its not too popular. its crazy how fast some of these sites are growing, I need to start thinking of some ideas!

@nicholas Thanks. Yah, it’s pretty amazing seeing some of the new services growing so quickly. I’m personally interested in seeing how a service like Pinterest will do next year.
Fantastic goods from you, man. Thanks indeed for sharing.
Ok, thanks, this is neat and all but can someone please explain
- what metrics are we talking about? What’s a +320% or +1600% viral lift?
- what % growth is based on? I assume it’s Year over Year (Jan 1 to Dec 12th or something…) since we’re talking 2011 recap…
However, Google Plus was launched in June 2011. So what does +323% growth mean?
Thank you!

@Briac, Viral Lift is the percentage increase in traffic due to shares and clicks.
% Growth is based off of 1 year of data. The data started from Jan 1, 2011.
Google Plus’s growth was measured from the point when it was first integrated with our platform. The % was calculated from that starting date.
Let me know if that answers your questions.
Thanks Jeff,
ok for Viral lift, even though I would love to see the source data. (are we talking average across multiple experiments? how big is the sample size?)
For G+ I’m afraid it doesn’t answer. a % growth is a division of the difference between two values over the base value. For a Year Over Year Growth, the equation is (Year 2 – Year 1)/Year 1. (new period change compared to base, over the base). i.e, $1000 in Year 1, $1100 in Year 2. (1100-1000)/1000 = 0.10 => 10% growth
In your case, what is the base period and the new period? June vs December? First Q versus last Q? Maybe you averages Month over Month growth from June to December?
Same thing for the rest of the infographic. You’re saying the data starts Jan 1 2011, so you didn’t not compare it to 2010 then?? Are you saying you looked a Jan 2011 total volume of shares vs December total? Or for each month you computed the growth and then averaged it?
Please explain!
To clarify a little bit, when I read Sharing trend for 2011, twitter grew by 576.9%, I assume something such as total sharing actions with twitter button in 2010 (10/1/1 to 10/31/1) was, for instance, 1 million. And in 2011, it was 6.769 millions
Because ( 6.769 – 1 ) / 1 = 576.9% Year over Year Growth.
